A few days after the spectacular dismasting of his Figaro off the Wolf Rock lighthouse in Cornwall, British skipper Marin Carnot is on the verge of making an unexpected comeback in the Solitaire du Figaro Paprec.
Thanks to an exceptional mobilization of its technical team, its partners and many players in the nautical sector, the boat bearing the colours of the Jérôme Lejeune Foundation was able to be repaired and re-equipped in less than 48 hours.
Under the coordination of his preparer, Timothée Courmont, who has been heavily involved since the boat's arrival in port, all the technical operations were carried out at a rapid pace to allow the skipper to consider a return to racing. Several chandlers and technical partners also mobilized urgently to provide the necessary equipment, while the insurers expedited the procedures essential for relaunching the boat.
Although abandonment seemed inevitable after the incident which occurred just a few dozen meters from the Wolf Rock lighthouse, Marin Carnot should now be able to reach Vigo on Saturday in order to line up at the last minute for the start of the second stage of the Solitaire du Figaro Paprec on Sunday morning.
“After a dismasting like that, you initially think everything is over. But seeing an entire team mobilize to get the boat going again gives incredible strength. Wearing the colours of a foundation dedicated to disability is also a source of resilience: I think of all the people with genetic diseases and their families, who have to move forward every day despite the obstacles, often with a quiet courage and a determination far more impressive than ours,” says Marin Carnot.
