What a night!

05-08-2010

Upwind, in choppy seas and a breeze of around 20 knots, it’s the trio made of Armel le Cléac’h, François Gabart and Jérémie Beyou lead the fleet after more than 20 hours of exhausting and physically demanding racing. The long reaching stretch across the Bay of Biscay is proving Armel Le Cléac’h’s more offshore option to be the best one. At 21h57, last night, Brit Air skipper and winner of the first leg, rounded SN1 mark just outside Saint Nazaire getting Grand Prix GMF Assistance. Young François Gabart (Skipper Macif 2010) and Jérémie Beyou (BPI) followed him shortly. These same three skippers were ranked at the top earlier today.

All the fleet is now forced to sail upwind tacking along the stunning Morbihan coast to get to the finish line in Brest. The latest position report show that the 45 skippers are spread on a fairly large area of 35 miles and split in two groups, those who chose to leave Belle-Ile on the left and a small group who opted to sail closer to shore. The skippers also profited to get some very much needed rest, necessary to deal with the last 115 miles to the finish, among rocks and dangers, with tides and currents to tackle. .
Earlier today, at dawn, very few solo sailors answered to the VHF chat. Obviously recovering strength and energies…
