Laurent Pellecuer comes out on top after light and tricky conditions on first night at sea
31-07-2009

Laurent Pellecuer holds narrow lead after a sleepless first night at sea in what was forecast to be very light conditions. The frustratingly light conditions mean the skippers have been stuck to helming and trimming sails and spinnaker. By early morning the breeze has veered to the south, spinnakers are packed away and the genoas used in the light 2 to 6 knots of breeze that is expected to build throughout the day.
Laurent Pellecuer (Arnolfin.fr), Yann Eliès (Generali) and Ronan Treussart (Black Hawk), who were already in the leading pack after yesterday’s start from Loreint , have managed to hold on albeit opting for different courses. A 20-mile lateral gap has now built between the most extreme boats on a North West to South East line.
Pelletier from Montpellier has chosed the Easterly route, lie Armel Tripon (Gedimat) and Michel Desjoyeaux (Foncia). Those on the most Eastern side having taken this option include Paul Meilhat (Domino’s Pizza Erwan Tabarly (Athema), and Nicolas Lunven (CGPI), whilst on the opposite side towards the north west we see Gérald Veniard (Macif), Corentin Douguet (E.Leclerc Mobile), Antoine Koch (Sopra Group) and Jérémie Beyou (Bernard Paoli). In the centre of both and well positioned in the rankings we see Well placed in the rankings are Yann Eliès, Ronan Treussart, also Charles Caudrelier Benac (Bostik) and Nicolas Bérenger (Koné Elevators) who have opted for this middle route.
The wind is due to build gradually from the south throughout the day and it is those who reach this first who will be who will be able to make inroads into the 300 miles remaining to La Coruna.
